New Security Features

In 2021, the United States Mint introduced an anti-counterfeiting edge notch on the American Eagle 1-ounce gold and silver coins, a feature designed to enhance security. 

This notch, which disrupts the coin's reeding approximately at the 6 o’clock position relative to the obverse side, was a new addition to the 2021 issues. It first appeared in June 2021 on both the gold and silver bullion coins, which featured enhanced versions of the original 1986 obverse designs along with entirely new reverse designs. 

For the 2022 and 2023 editions of these coins, the Mint subtly relocated this anti-counterfeiting measure without much public disclosure.
