First struck in 1948, the Benjamin Franklin Silver Half Dollar had a promising future. It remained popular until 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Just a few months later, in 1964, the U.S. Mint replaced the Franklin Half Dollar with a new half dollar in honor of the deceased President. Who knows? If President Kennedy had not been assassinated, the half dollar might still be in use today!
