Only 131,720 mint state $5 half eagles were struck in 1878. Many made it to circulation, making it harder to find in uncirculated grades than later-date examples. Most examples seen by NGC tend to range from AU58-MS62. The proofs of this date are far more scarce, however, with only 20 pieces struck. Less than half of those are thought to still exist.
